Help Put a Stop to Illegal Dumping
Galveston, Texas
February 4, 2009
Over the past four months, the City of Galveston has made tremendous progress removing debris from our community in the wake of Hurricane Ike. However, illegal dumping has become a persistent and unsightly problem. Help the City put a stop to illegal dumping by reporting it!
It is a crime to illegally dump refuse in the City of Galveston. The Galveston Police Department and City Code Enforcement Officers are on the look out for anyone disposing of refuse improperly. Violators found dumping materials will be cited and fined up to $2,000. To report illegal dumping please call the Galveston Police Department’s non-emergency phone number: (409) 765-3702.
Brandon Wade, Deputy City Manager, has a special message for property owners currently repairing or rebuilding their homes and businesses. “Do not allow your contractor to mislead you into believing its ok to dispose of construction debris from reconstruction activities on your home in the city’s streets,” he stated. “Insist your contractor dispose of all construction debris at the City’s transfer station or at a landfill,” he went on to say. “They are required to do so by City Ordinance and State law.”
The City’s Transfer Station is open. Storm debris from commercial buildings and new construction debris is accepted. Galveston residents may make one free trip per month and leave up to 1,000 pounds of material at the station. You must present a current water bill and have proper identification. Hours of Operation: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.; Saturday 7:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
