City of Galveston Press Release: Galveston's Water Supply Negative for Bacteria
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Galveston’s Water Supply Negative for Bacteria
Galveston, Texas
January 27, 2009
After Legionella bacteria was detected in the water supply at John Sealy Hospital last month, the City of Galveston tested its own water system to determine if the bacteria had spread beyond the confines of the facility. Results came back and confirmed the City’s water supply was not contaminated.
The City’s testing regiment included two different methods: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) experiment; and the culture technique. All test results for legionella bacteria came back negative indicating the source of the problem was not city water facilities. Samples were taken from the following Island locations:
1. Water Treatment Plant in Texas City
2. Virginia Point Metering Station
3. 30th Street Pump Station
4. UTMB elevated storage tank
City officials sampled water from these locations following the chain of supply from the Mainland onto the Island and then to the UTMB campus. Between five and six million gallons of water pass through the City of Galveston’s 30th Street Pump Station each day. That’s roughly half the island’s water supply.
All structures located on the island should have flushed their water systems immediately following the lifting of the City’s boil water notice in October 2008. If homeowners or building owners have not already purged their water lines they are strongly encouraged to do so immediately to eliminate any stagnant water. The City routinely tests its water system and it meets all water quality requirements.

Water Update
The following buildings and units have no damage, the power and water is on, and the Fire Safety in place and can be occupied. Please remember that the elevators are still not running. We are waiting on the insurance company to finish the review of the elevators repair bids.
The water is on to all of the units in the buildings listed below. However, the other units had damage caused by the storm and are not repaired yet so they could be missing alarm sirens for Fire safety. So it is not recommended that these units or any units that took damage be occupied until build back is complete.
Keep in mind that not all of the units listed have had the ball valve over the water heater turned on so that will have to be done before use. It should also be said that you will want to flush out the pipes for at least ten minutes at all fixtures before use. It has been awhile since they have been on and there most likely will be a smell of rotton eggs due to the sulfer in the water.

As for the other units and buildings, I am waiting for the City to conduct its inspection and approve the power to be reconnected at the water pump buildings before we can complete the last little bit of Fire Safety work needed to turn the water on. Keep in mind that there are some buildings that will not have water due to the extensive damage they took from the storm and the plumbing repairs in the garages will have to wait till the reconstruction starts.

Hospitality Updates:
The Bay Water pool repairs are now under way. The pool is currently undergoing retro fitting to ensure that we are compliant with the new federal law for the VGBA pool safety act of 2009. When the retro fit is completed the re-plastering of the pool, lazy river and hot tub will start along with the repairs of all in-pool lighting. All pool pumps and related equipment have been repaired with the exception of the pumps that control the flow of our lazy river. At the same time, Pampered Lawn has started to clean up the landscaped areas inside the pool area. We are working on schedule with Pampered Lawns to install new and replace any expired vegetation in the coming months. Lastly, Cotton USA has been contracted to start the required roof repairs.
The Beach Club will also undergo the same retro fitting required by the VGBA pool safety act. In the coming weeks, the Hot Tub and the Kiddie pool will be drained and prepared for the necessary repairs. Cotton USA will also complete the needed roof repairs. All internet, television and cable service have been restored at the Beach Club and all functional areas of the Beach Club are open!
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Roof Update
This is a quick update to let you know that the all of the roofs at the condo buildings have been repaired. Building 10 that had severe truss damage on the bay side has been fixed with the exception of a few minor details like the resetting of the ridge shingles and vent. (Updated picture posted below) I also want to let everyone know that there are still some small repairs needed to get the fire suppression and water back on to the buildings and this should be complete by the end of the month. We are still waiting to hear back from the insurance company before we can start reconstruction inside the units. I do hope to have an answer soon in regards to this issue.

GLO Cleans Beach in Front of Pointe West
Earlier this week, the Texas General Land Office's contractor began working on removing the debris that washed onto our beaches during Hurricane Ike. The contractor raked the beaches and piled the debris in front of the line of vegetation to be removed by another crew. According to the GLO, it could take up to April to finish the debris removal from of all the Galveston's beaches. Attached are pictures of the work done earlier this week.

Bay Water Pool Repair Update
To all;
I just wanted to follow up with you regarding the Bay Water pool. The electrical repairs and water service have been restored. The pool clean up process started on Monday. Progressive Pools started to drain the lazy river and hot tub first thing. That process will take a day or so. Over the next week they will begin working on the pool pumps, jets and river flow and begin repair/replace the required items which could take a few weeks depending on what they find. The last step for Progressive will be to clean up all of the debris within the gated area (with the exception of the landscaping). Once the pool repairs are completed we will move towards repairing the towel room, restrooms and so on. The final step in the process will be to complete the landscaping. I hope this helps in keeping you up to date as our team is working hard at restoring Pointe West to pre Ike conditions.
